Baseball, Burgers, and Life….Not Always In That Order

First off, I’d like to apologize for sleeping on the job for the last three months or so. Life jumped out and bit me like it never has before; the resulting struggle to keep my head and heart above water resulted in extreme negligence of the site, but I’m back and ready to resume my quest to eat every good burger in the greater Cincinnati area and who knows, maybe I’ll even pontificate on baseball once and a while.

Speaking of which – Baseball has been instrumental in my return to truly getting back to my version of normal. The smell of the grass/hot dogs/popcorn, the sunshine on my face, a soft breeze channeling through GABP, and the perfectly manicured field all take me to a more peaceful place, temporarily quieting the storm in my head. The same goes for burgers; sitting around a table with great friends having a beer and a burger makes me feel normal again and grilling on the back deck on a hot day speaks to my soul.

Already this year I’ve watched Johnny Cueto mow down the Marlins on Opening Day from the all you can eat seats (a great deal if have kids and you buy them at face value), I saw Mat Latos get knocked around a bit on Opening Night amongst a great group of internet and real life friends, then took in the last two games of the Astros series where Cueto dominated again and Latos struggled but kept the Reds close enough to pull out a comeback win. I’ll also be in attendance this Friday for the #RedsTweetup, which means I will have attended 5 of the first 15 available home games. This is well ahead of even the most ambitious attendance pace I could have imagined. I’ve also been eating burgers at an incredible pace, not bothering to rate or review them but rather just relaxing and enjoying the hell out of them. In retrospect this is probably the best thing I could have done with my time considering how bad of a place I was in for a while.

Baseball also tends to make me introspective, and what’s been kicking around this old head of mine of late is the parallel between the game I love and the life I live. I’m not nearly the first nor last to use baseball as an allegory, but please allow me to lay another straw on that haystack. We all go through slumps, we all have days where we don’t have our best stuff, and we all have stretches where we look more like Chuck Knoblauch than Brandon Phillips. And of course, how could I forget being considered successful when we fail 65% of the time? I’ve been knocked down, kicked the little league grounder, and couldn’t find the plate with a GPS and magical home plate detector since the beginning of the year. But I’m back baby (fastball and all), so look forward to a lot more in the coming weeks/months. Bring on the Boursin!

Now go vote in the poll on the sidebar so we can get this show back on the road!

Review – Neighbor’s Bar

I’ll be completely honest – I had never heard of The Neighbor’s Bar despite living on the West Side/Best Side for 3+ years. Missing out on Neighbor’s was a failing on my part, seeing as I visited plenty of crappy places in my time there when I could have been having a damned good burger amongst friendly people. While Neighbor’s might not be on your short list of places in Cincinnati to get a good burger, I’m here to tell you it should be.

The Neighbor’s Bar is small and you could easily miss it going down the old part of North Bend Road if you’re not careful. However, don’t let the unassuming exterior fool you – there’s fun to be had in this outpost in North Bend, as well as a pretty good burger. It’s owned by Tamie & Jonathan, who I was lucky enough to speak to on our first visit outside while having a smoke. (Ed. Note – The heat lamp was not available on the second visit because people were leaving it on. Cut that shit out, I’m a weenie when it comes to cold.)

The kitchen is run by an imposing but gregarious fellow who goes by Monkey – Monkey expressed deep regret to me on our first visit, saying that if he had known we were coming he would have been behind the grill himself. Well, that’s kind of the point dude. We are the burger ninjas and stuff. (Yet Another Ed Note: Monkey – Don’t worry, Matt did a fine job in your absence.)

Have you noticed that I’ve dropped a lot of first names in this review? That’s because Neighbor’s is the type of place where you’re going to get to know the people that are serving you. It’s a west side thing and I love it, even if a shall-go-unnamed someone talked me into taking the “cheeseburger shot” which immediately ranked in the top three of “awful things I’ve ever put in my mouth”. Tequila followed by chili sauce followed by pickle juice. It’s even worse when your slightly drunken eyes think the pickle juice is melted butter, by the way. Thanks for being a sport and joining me, Graham.

At any rate, the burgers at Neighbor’s are fantastic. The bun was the star of the night, locally bought at North College Hill Bakery. They get their meat and produce locally from Findlay Market, which always makes a big difference; fresh is always better kids. The burger options were numerous (check out the menu here), with many specialty burgers available. We not-so-luckily happened to be there on “Build Your Own Burger for $4.50″ night, which brought down the bill nicely. We were also there on $2 Margarita Tuesdays which led to one of the funnier parts of the night. My wife asked another member how the margaritas were to which she responded, “Not very good, they’re too strong”. My wife immediately ordered one; that’s my girl.

The service was pretty good considering we strolled into a small bar with a group of 13 people. They did the very best they could and I can say from our second visit, they’re incredibly attentive.

On our first visit most everyone agreed that the burgers were properly cooked to temperature, which is BY FAR the most important thing in my/our book. It amazes me that so many places we visit have issues with this, honestly. If you’re going to pride yourself on burgers, there are two things you need to do great before anything else – you need to have good, properly seasoned meat and you need to cook burgers to temp. Neighbor’s did that, and added a great bun and good toppings to boot. Somehow we failed to get a lot of decent pics from this visit, but this one gives a good idea of what you’ll get when you order a burger at Neighbor’s:

It's a burger!

It's a burger!

On our second visit I gave the Big Monkey a run. It’s two half pound burgers topped with bacon and bourbon onions, with grilled cheese sandwiches as buns. There were some laughs had as I tore though it, finishing before most if not all of the other guys. What can I say? It’s what I do. It was over the top and tasty as hell, just like I like it. I’d love to see what kind of challenge burger Monkey could come up with.

The only lingering question I have after visiting Neighbor’s twice is…..what the hell is the deal with the creepy stuffed animal in the basement that mocks me through the window?

They’ve made our top five, here’s the damage.

Review – Herb & Thelma’s….as good as advertised?

In a word?

YES.

(The above goofy formatting is intentional in order to offset the “Chip’s Grill Open” picture’s prominent placement, which has already been accomplished due to me blathering on and this sentence being so long. Hell, at this point it didn’t even end up being goofy. Whatever. Take that Mrs. Broyles, the woman who failed me in AP English to teach my ornery ass a lesson. Thank you by the way, you changed my life immensely by teaching me the value of doing things according to proper process. Do me a favor, if possible – comment and point out the innumerable errors in this post. Validate me, please. I double dog dare you.)

When building a “Best Burger In Cincinnati” list, Herb & Thelma’s perfectly fits the darkhorse role. Unless someone has told you about this dingy little hole in the wall, chances are you’ll never end up there. If you HAVE been enlightened to its existence and manged to wander in you undoubtedly have a all/nothing view on the place; If you haven’t ended up there via direct word of mouth chances are you were disappointed. If you happen to be of the persuasion of our group however, Herb & Thelma’s is a rarity that deserves to be appreciated and lauded for its simplicity and old fashioned charm.

For those of us among the original RR Burger Tour Crew, Herb & Thelma’s holds a special place in our heart. It’s been a meeting place for us for a couple of years now, a haven away from the douchebaggery of Newport On The Levee or the stuffiness of Mt. Adams. The bulk of Herb & Thelma’s appeal lies in its simplicity – it’s located in a nondescript building in old Covington, in the turn before you head north into the area where the kids good at football go to school and dead center among the people who bust their ass in the hopes that their kid might one day go to school up the hill. This is the place where locals gather to shoot the shit about local things, brag about the local kids, and bitch about the way things aren’t the way they were when they were kids.

All that said, Herb & Thelma’s makes one hell of a burger, although it’s hard to put a finger on why it’s so great. Logically speaking, H&T should never be in the Best of Cincinnati discussion. It’s an incredibly simple (albeit very tasty) cheeseburger served in the dive-iest of all dive bars. Where Herb & Thelma’s works its way into the Best Of discussion is simple – they absolutely NAIL the most important category (at least in my opinion) – atmosphere. Herb & Thelma’s cheeseburgers are great and I would never deny that but what sets the place apart is the ambiance, or better yet, the lack thereof. The look in Chip’s eyes as you order is the same whether you’re a local who’s been coming for 25 years you’re a first timer; he smiles, thanks you, looks down, and serves up the burger he’s been serving for god knows how long.

It’s incredibly hard to put into words, the feeling of “being home”. Eating a cheeseburger at Herb & Thelma’s gives you the same comfort level you have at a birthday or holiday gathering after the oddball guests leave and it’s just you and your closest friends and family sitting around, talking about the embarrassing thing Joe-Just-Left did two summers ago when you took him out on the boat and he drank too much. You can laugh out loud, and you can laugh REALLY loud. No one will look at you funny, like you’re somehow impeding their meal by having a good time. Hell, if anything, they’ll give you the cursory laugh and ask what was so damned funny. These are the people who make the world turn, and you feel that when you go to Herb & Thelma’s.

EDIT: Something very important to note – Herb & Thelma’s is a cash only establishment, so hit the ATM on the way since there aren’t any around the place itself.

Throw a really good burger into the mix and you have a new #1 on the BnB Burger Tour. Individual rankings/opinions after the jump.

Burger Review – Arthur’s

Our latest review takes us to Hyde Park, where one of the most popular burger spots in town lies.  A few absences brought the crew down to 7 for this one, but it was more than enough.  Of the places we’ve reviewed so far, this is the first that it usually mentioned in the “best burger in Cincinnati” conversation, so let’s get to it.

I arrived to an almost full table, which is always a nice way to enter a BnB outing.  While we ordered beers and plotted our Burger Madness toppings (more on this later), we were surprised to see a commotion on the other side of the restaurant.  As it worked its way over to our side of the restaurant, we realized who it was… it was this guy.

Sure enough, Cincinnati mayor Mark Mallory was in the restaurant enjoying a burger at one of the best places in town.  He whisked around the place like he had important city-running things to do, but made  a couple of seconds to stop and greet our crew of fine upstanding Cincinnatians.  Well, almost.  He gave a head nod to BnB’er Scott because they knew each other somehow, but it still counts.

The thing that Arthur’s is known for is it’s “Burger Madness” burger special, available on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays.  It’s a pretty sweet deal if you like to try interesting toppings on your burgers; $7.50 for a burger (with fries) and any kind of topping you can think of.  The only topping that we got upcharged for was Boursin cheese, which falls under their “gourmet toppings” category (but it was totally worth it).

Hit the jump for a few photos and what we thought of the place…

Burger Review – Flipdaddy’s Burgers and Beers

This ended up being kind of an impromptu trip when Nathan was in town; Jeremy and I couldn’t make it for burgers at the previous By Golly’s trip which Nathan graciously recapped for us, so we headed to Flipdaddy’s in Mariemont on a rainy Sunday afternoon.  The place is pretty unassuming from the outside (situated in a strip mall), but on the inside we found tons of space that was laid out pretty nicely and a HUGE bar with tons of beer varieties to choose from.  Giddy up.

We sat down and proceeded to order beers, a subject in which our waitress was exceedingly helpful.  Considering our previous endeavours I was impressed that our waitress was even able to list off the beers on tap let alone characteristics of each, and even possessed an ability to make a recommendation.  The menu had plenty of burger choices to choose from but Jeremy and I both were sold on the burger they had on special, as the very mention of Boursin cheese on a burger makes our hearts go all a-flutter.  We placed our orders and in about a beer and a half’s time, there were 3 plates of food on the table (while Tweedledee and Tweedledipshit were on a smoke break).  Of course, I did unspeakable things to both of their meals (okay, no I didn’t), and we chowed down.

Here are our reviews… as you can tell, we were pretty impressed:

Nathan (Chuck Norris burger [secret sauce, green chile, jalapeno compote, pepperjack): 61/80
"Ordered medium rare, delivered medium rare.  Singles are 1/3 lb, I ordered the double patty.  Burger is a blend of ground chuck, brisket and short rib, proprietary blend.  Supposedly a buttery toasted bakery bun,, it could have used slightly more toasting.  Being a cheese guy, and not caring about topping in general, Flipdaddy’s does not disappoint with 12 options of cheese.  I know they had a good selection of spreads/condiments.  My burger came with a secret spicy sauce, which tasted like spicy big mac sauce, and then had a green chili and jalapeno compote, which tasted more like fresh jalapenos and then relish.  Awesome draught beer selection, and the burgers come with regular fries, which were delicious, and then you can upcharge for sweet potato fries which some ridiculous dipping sauce, and also grilled mac & cheese, which did not disappoint.  While they may not have a variety of sides, the ones I sampled were tasty and I would order all 3 upon return.  But the draught beer selection is worth a return visit alone.  Place seems pretty upscale, which kinda isn’t my scene for a burger place, and they could use more TVs when you’re not at the bar, but what can you do?  I’d had a beverage here before, but never a burger, so I was encouraged to give this place a shot.  I’d read some less than stellar reviews prior to arrival, but after the meal I was skeptical as to what the Hell happened to the people that led them to think so highly of this place. I was more than pleasantly surprised and this place will definitely be a must stop next time I’m in Cincinnati."

Brandon (French Connection burger [Boursin cheese, onion straws, garlic aioli, optional pretzel bun]): 62/80
“Meat was decent quality, not really spectacular though.  A bit overcooked but not by much.  I opted for the pretzel bun, which was a spectacular choice.  Toppings-wise, Boursin cheese and onion straws can’t go wrong. The garlic aioli was decent too.  Huge selection of good draft beer.  I got regular fries and tried the two more sides from the others and they were all outstanding.  Not crowded, probably due to the fact that we went on a Sunday.  I’d assume it to be different on a weekend night, but because of this, the wait staff was attentive and everything was correct.  Burgers are too expensive, but beers are pretty cheap.  Despite what I’d heard about the place, I was impressed. The beer selection and promise of a good burger will have me going back.”

Jeremy (French Connection burger [same as above, but with a buttery toasted bun]: 60/80
“The meat was very good, but overcooked by 1.5 levels.  I wasn’t a huge fan of the bun, a little too mealy.  The Boursin cheese and onion straws killed, and I tried the Garlic Mayonnaise Aioli, not bad.  The sweet potato fries were out of this world, and they had a huge selection of beer.  Wait staff was very nice and attentive.  Burgers are a little overpriced in my opinion, beer was cheapish. I’ll be going back at some point, it was very good.”

High marks from all involved.  Interestingly enough they opened up a second location close to where I & Jeremy work, so we’ll be checking that out sooner rather than later.  If it’s able to live up to the standard of the original, I’ll be thrilled.

Are we full of shit?  Anything to add?  Let us know in the comments.

We have a few more reviews to come in the near future, so stay tuned for that, and we might throw our comments on the current state of baseball in Cincinnati if we feel so inclined.  Stay tuned!

Guest Burger Review – By Golly’s

(Ed. Note: This is a guest review written by Nathan, the formatting was all screwy so I had to fix it. — JH)

Every time I plan a trip back to the Cincinnati area, I always look forward to meeting up with The Usual Suspects, consisting of Bill, Kim, Jonathan, Chandra, Brandon, Jeremy, Erin and Mike, typically for a burger and a beer (or 2). On this night, I would dine with Bill, Kim, Jonathan, and Chandra, as Brandon joined us for beverages. Next time Jeremy, Erin, and Mike.

I suggested By Golly’s in Milford and my track record for suggesting burger stops needed a win, as I will always have Mt. Adam’s Bar & Grill held against me and not in that good, wholesome judging the winner of a wet t-shirt contest kind of way. But I digress.

6:00 PM was our dining hour of choice. This made sense, given that none of us really wanted to deal with obnoxious tOSU fans between the hours of 12 PM and 3 PM. I showed up at a couple minutes before 6 to find everyone but Brandon, as I knew he would show up later to join us for beverages. I should have known something was up, as everyone (minus Kim) had bottles in front of them; no draught beer in sight. Once our dingbat waitress showed up, I found out that there was something wonky with their tap system (I guess no cooling for their kegs or something, or something with their lines? Regardless, no draught beer…) so it would be Miller High Life out of the bottle for me all night (as if that’s ever a problem), but I could see the rest of my party struggle the rest of the night with their bottle selections, as Chandra enjoyed the last 2 Yuengling Black & Tans By Golly’s had on hand for the night.
Back to the dingbat waitress…. So she seemed to have good intentions, but screwed up some drink orders during the night, didn’t keep us properly hydrated, didn’t bring out condiments we ordered when we needed/wanted them, and was slow to take our order but given the company present we made the best of it. You’ll hear more about her in a bit…

We finally got everything ordered, food showed up, not everyone was happy with the temperature of their burger, and the waitress was definitely slow making sure we had fresh beverages in front of us. Keep in mind we’re at By Golly’s during a typical College Football & Basketball Saturday, so there’s plenty of viewing options on TV, right? Chandra & Jonathan wanted to watch the UK game (no one else at the table had objections, not sure who else really wanted to see the game) and asked for it at least twice that I heard, but did it happen? Nope. Failhorn, way to go dingbat waitress. I guess it’s cool to watch Entertainment Tonight and Wheel of Fortune though, right?

I apologize for no pictures, I’ll give a quick listing of the burger ordered by each person, their scoring, and some comments:

Nathan: Needmore Double Cheeseburger (49.5/80)
“I’ve never had a bad burger here. Burger cooked exactly how I wanted it, however the lack of draught beer, the awful loud live music, and our waitress who had an IQ probably lower than her bra size and waist size added together unfortunately detracted from a place I really enjoy.”

Chandra: Pesto Burger (45/80)
“Great toppings on my burger; roasted peppers, pesto, feta. Sides were lackluster, no draft beer, I had the last 2 Black & Tans. Not bad, I would go again.”

Jonathan: Grilled Ham N Burger (47/80)
“As far as a burger place goes, they make a great grilled cheese. Using 2 grilled cheese sandwiches as the bun is something I’ve wanted to try for a while. They were delicious. Beer Selection was bad because they were unable to give us any draft beers. They had several signs up for Yuengling, but were completely sold out. Mostly macrobrews available.”

Bill: Grilled Ham N Burger (42/80)
“Numerous options for a burger; Coney burger, pesto burger, bbq burger, ham/grilled cheese burger. Not having any beer on tap was disappointing. I understand that things happen but when a bar loses its ability to provide draught beer, that’s a problem. In addition, it was clear our table of 6 wanted Yuengling, we were told “sorry, we are all out”. Uhhhhh, there was a Kroger AND a UDF right across the street. Send a staff member over to grab some Yuengling. At $10.29/12 pack the establishment would still make a killing on $3+ beers. Sorry, but the arrival of Yuengling in Cincy has been well publicized and highly anticipated. Having a supply of that on reserve, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR TAPS BREAK, would be a smart business model.”

Time to give a group scoring:

Bun: 7
Toppings: 6.25
Sides: 3.5
Atmosphere: 5.25
Price: 6.5
Overall Experience: 12

Total Score: 46

The consensus is that it was a good burger, better than Sammy’s, and that we’d all go back. I think the Baseball and Burgers community needs to get more people out there to give this place some love, especially when their taps are working, or when they actually have Yuengling bottles in stock. For whatever reason we ran into the dumbest, worst server I’ve ever had at By Golly’s on this night, which is a shame but I don’t know that we can hold this one girl against this establishment. What we can hold against her is her inability to change the damn channel to the game we wanted.

If you’re ever in Milford, give this place a shot.

Until the next time I’m in the Tri-State Area,
Nathan

Burger Review – Zola Pub and Grill

The BnB boys and broad (love you Ash!) decided that Zola Pub and Grill would be our next stop so we descended upon Mainstrauss like well, a group of white people between the ages of 25-40 looking for beer and food. Wow, it sounds positively pedestrian when I say it like that, doesn’t it?

How about we play trivia instead? Question – What could possibly render our normally raucous group nearly speechless, speaking only in hushed tones and semantics? Read on to find out.

I arrived in Mainstrauss around 7:15 and met Scott and Bill on the bottom floor, which seemed busy for a Tuesday night. Zola is a charming place like most of the bars in the area, and the bartender was very nice and helpful. The downstairs area is small and once everyone arrived it was obvious that we couldn’t be accommodated in that space so we moved upstairs. The upstairs was the classic overflow area, sparsely equipped but completely functional. The wait staff did a good job making sure we were properly served and entertained with the television programming options we desired, so we moved on to ordering our burgers. My only complaint with the upstairs area is that smoking is prohibited despite it being allowed downstairs; how does that make sense?

Burgers were cooked, delivered, and eaten but the great part of the night happened after everyone was done eating and we were sitting around chewing the fat and telling lies. We had been fortunate to that point in time to have had the entire upstairs area at our disposal and had taken full advantage, all of us acting the fool at some point. I happened to be seated facing the outside windows away from the stairway leading downstairs, so I was confused when the entire table seemed to be rendered speechless simultaneously. This of course led me to look behind me which revealed the recent addition to our area, a couple of Covington PD’s finest being seated behind us. The cops had come in for dinner and suddenly I’m seated amongst the 2nd Choir, it was amazing. I have since hatched a plan to bring my retired-state-cop dad to future burger meetups just to get people to shut up so I can be heard. You’re cool with that, right dad? (If my dad actually reads this and posts a comment to this story, I will do something outrageous. I’m pretty sure he thinks a blag is what comes after an alog.)

On to the Review. The general consensus is that Zola serves a pretty good burger but they need to work on cooking the burger to order and getting it out a little quicker. The sides were great, with the Unique Slaw being a huge hit. Pictures and reviews after the jump.

Burger Review – Cafe de Wheels

This tour stop happened outside of our normal bi-weekly schedule, but I suppose an unorthodox post is appropriate for an unorthodox burger stop, which is exactly what Cafe de Wheels is.  Jeremy and I saw on Twitter that this burger truck with a growing reputation was making a lunch stop in the part of town where he and I both work, so it made perfect sense to check it out.

We didn’t really have to wait in line, and only had to wait around 5-10 minutes for our food.  However, this wasn’t downtown, so I’m not sure if that’s the norm, but from that aspect it was a convenient lunch option, especially since it was about 1500 feet from my office.  I ordered a regular Wheels burger and Jeremy went with one with only cheese and bacon on it (since he’s apparently anti-toppings), but he made up for it with getting feta fries where I just went with the original.  It’s worth mentioning that their menu is pretty extensive overall, and that both of us tried pretty basic offerings, as neither of us had tried it before. Here’s how we scored it:

The averages of our two scores:

Meat – 7

Bun – 5.5

Toppings – 6.5

Sides – 8.5

Atmosphere – 7.5

Price – 7

Overall (x2) – 14.5

TOTAL SCORE: 56.5

Brandon (Wheels burger and fries): 58/80
“Meat was of a better quality than I expected. Bun was over toasted, but had a good ratio of bun to burger. The bacon was fine on it, but the cheese was unspectacular and the “onion marmalade” was either not flavorful or not present. Not normally a big fan of steak fries, but these were pretty good. Bottom line, if I was hungry and came across the Cafe de Wheels truck again, I wouldn’t hesitate to have it again so I could try something else.”

Jeremy (plain Wheels burger and feta fries): 55/80
“Meat was cooked properly, but had an odd texture. Bun was overly toasted, to the point of crispiness. Feta fries were outstanding. Pretty clean for a food truck, with quick order turnaround. Overall it wasn’t bad, but not world changing either.”

What do you guys think?

Burger Review – Sammy’s Gourmet Burger and Beers

For our first review we visited Sammy’s Gourmet Burger And Beers, located on the corner of Creek Rd. and Kenwood Road in Blue Ash. We had a huge turnout (ten people in all), so it’s a good thing ‘tHan called ahead and made sure they carved out a spot for us. A good time was had by all, read on for all the gory details.

I arrived right on time and much to my surprise, nearly everyone was already present and quaffing at the bar. The arrival of Yuengling had been celebrated the day before here in Cincinnati so there was some trepidation among the group as to whether or not it would be available for our outing. Lo and behold, the boys and girl were bellied up to the bar with enormous mugs of the good stuff straight from the tap! The story I got was that when they arrived Yuengling was not on tap but they sweet talked the bartender into taking out the Sierra Nevada and replacing it with Yuengling. This was a solid move on the part of Sammy’s as I’m sure they sold approximately ten times more Yuengling than they would have Sierra Nevada.

Once we settled down at our table, we had a chance to review the menu and make our choices. I was pleasantly surprised to find a wide array of choices when it came to burgers; I’ll be making a return trip or two at some point to try some of the other options. There were also plenty of choices when it came to sides and beer, which is always a good thing to see. We all ordered and found something to talk about while waiting (NEVER a problem with our group of, ahem, opinionated folk). The wait staff was great all night, accommodating a large and unforgiving group nearly flawlessly. Once the burgers arrived we chowed down and formed our opinions. Read the reviews after the jump, but not before a few pictures:

A brief introduction…

The city of Cincinnati has a long standing food tradition.  When you think of Cincinnati food, you think of things from chili and goetta to local brands like LaRosa’s pizza and Graeter’s ice cream.  Do burgers usually pop up in that conversation?  Why not?  From burger joints that have been around for ages to bold restauranteurs pushing the envelope to new and exciting extremes, from the simplest patty/bun combinations to the most complex gourmet concoctions, Cincinnati is a city that covers all the bases with its burger tradition.

What makes this even more of an interesting topic is that there really isn’t a consensus “best burger” in our fair city.  Sure, local publications have their “official” rankings from year to year, but if you ask 10 Cincinnatians to name their favorite burger, you’re likely to get 8 or 9 different responses.  We want to get to the bottom of what makes the burgers great, and let our readers in on a couple of burgers they may not have been able to try yet.

This project started unofficially a few years ago, when a group of local contributors to Red Reporter started getting together to try local burgers that they hadn’t had before.  From an impromptu meeting with a Reds hall-of-famer at Terry’s to jch stuffing his face with 5 pounds of food to get his picture on a wall at Bard’s, we had some good times and ate some great burgers.  We also found a couple of venues that we’d rather not revisit and a couple of burgers we’d rather not have again.

What we intend to do with this site is to merge two of our favorite things.  We want to provide a resource for visitors that want to find a tasty burger in our city.  We want to provide a forum for people to share their local burger experiences, get/give recommendations, and discover some delicious burgers on the way.  We want to enjoy sharing burgers and talking about our favorite sport with our friends and maybe make some new ones in the process.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Burgers and Baseball.
